I am 57yrs old and on SSDisability. I do NOT want to see this country pursue "Universal Coverage". It is NOT MY responsibility to pay more, get less and penalize my doctors just to make sure that people who have never worked a day in their lives can abuse the system. Health care is NOT a "right" and I am fed up with being told that *I* need to pay more taxes and that if I do not do it with a smile that I am an evil, selfish person. Tell Obama to take his filthy socialist ideas and go to some other country, but do NOT pervert these United States with that excrement. More Government is NOT the solution. It is the problem! Government is NOT supposed to fix all the "boo-boos" in the world, THAT is what hard work, commitment to purpose and willingness to sacrifice to provide better for ones OWN family is for. NO UNIVERSAL Health Care - America hated it when Clinton suggested it and they do NOT need it now.

This two sided bullshit issue is getting out of hand. This is "Supposed " to be the greatest country on this earth. Quit saying that healthcare isn't the governments problem, the government is suppose to care and assist our needs thats why we pay taxes you stupid cunt because if you think that healthcare right now is fair then you have to be the dumbest bitch i have ever heard and those ideas that Obama has are not Socialist you prick there are simple DEMOCRATIC ideas and its a pretty damn good one.

I do not agree with Mr. charger below me. Obama's ideas are certainly socialist. Spreading the wealth?
On the the health care issue I am a conservative that believes in the way it is being done now. Big government is not the answer. Putting so much power into the hands of people is not a great option. Sure, there are problems with our current situation, but making health care a govt. issue is not the answer. What about the money doctors make? Plenty of jobs will be lost. Developing medication, research, all will be taken on by the government. What happened to capitalism?

Obama's ideas are as socialist as they come. The government could lower our insanely high taxes to help people afford healthcare rather than nationalizing the entire system and ruining it. By the way Mr. Charger, this IS the greatest nation in the world.

    Charger you are wrong.

One thing that could help with health care greatly is limiting doctor's liability. Their costs are driven sky high by the ridiculous amounts of malpractice insurance they have to carry just to cover themselves from frivolous lawsuits. Limit that liability to one million dollars and watch a lot of costs come down.

One thing I would like to see changed is the requirement that you have to be ON disability for two years before you are eligible for Medicare. As a double insult, you have to be disabled for six months before you can get disability. What is an unemployed disabled person supposed to do for health care for two and a half years? Please don't say Medicaid is the answer. A person that has worked and paid into the Medicare system should not have to reduce themselves to total poverty to receive health care.

Last time I checked to promote general welfare was in the preambel of the constitution and the right to life in the declaration of independence. If people die because they can't afford healthcare you dishonor those goals and rights.
National healthcare is not socialistic, not anymore than taxes, military and insureances are anyway.

First and foremost, ignore the ignorant. That is, dismiss all of the people concerned more with labels and truly focus on the health of the people.

Turn out the truth about foods and nutrition.

Tell the pharmaceutical companies and the "pill for every ill" doctors where to go.

If American's can't stop buying Triple Stuff Oreos and 5 pound bags of M&Ms (the freakin bags have handles nowadays!) then ban this garbage once and for all. Ban garbage ingredient like high fructose corn syrup (yeah, I know it's actually healthy...I saw the corn growers' ad too - oh yeah and ban completely false ads like that too)

I'll just stop there. It's all common sense really. Give the people good information. Teach them how to take care of themselves.

I'm hoping this administration will come through with a real change in health care. It won't be easy and it will piss a lot of rich people off but so be it.

Just in case the status quo and the money makers win again though, I'm already planning my family's relocation to either an EU or a select Asian country.

Life's too precious and short to deal with all the lies.

Yes we will need to do something about health care, but I think the whole country can see, congress can only do one thing at a time. The
mess with this bail out has the congressional approval rating in the
tank.I think we had better wait until
the president can get his feet under
him. The country is already making jokes about his teleprompter miscues. Health care had better wait
another AIG and none of you could
    get elected as dog catcher.

I agree with POttedMeat If we don't know how to nourish ourselves it won't matter if health care is free! We'll still be spending all our money on the drugs for our ills! So Senator get some BALLS tell the FDA To quit suppressing life saving cures and find out why drug companies are allowed to mark up their drug prices sky high! Maybe then this crisis won't be so hard to fix!

The government has not done such a great job managing the things the do currently, I would hate to give them something else to mismanage. The Federal Government should be restricted to its Constitutional limits, and nothing else. Read Article 1, section 8 and the 9th, 10th, and 13th Amendments.

Government shouldn't control health care, let alone the private enterprises but do offer them tax cuts in exchange for a reduction of prices. Offering Americans more tax cuts will also help them on being more able to afford healthcare. Allowing a massive government control health care system will bankrupt America so senator Grassley please stop the madness
    Thanks

To solve the health care problem, the USA needs a single payer health care system.

Our health care systems stinks. The U.S. ranks 37th according to the World Health Orginazation. We are stuck with PPO's and HMO's which limit choice of doctors and hospitals. In Canada you pick any doctor or hospital you want. The U.S. spends almost twice as much per person as the next country and we get worse results in so many areas like infant mortality.Single payer health care sytems have much less administrative costs than any private insurance company.Insurance companies serve no purpose since they are nothing more than an unnecessary middleman that increase the cost of health care and deny people with pre-existing medical conditions. We should expand Medicare for all as it will reduce costs and give freedom of choice of doctors and hospitals. But I know this will not happen as the insurance lobby runs congress especially the Republicans.

i am opposed to any fed govt run healthcare proposal that violates the constitutional freedom of choices to go to a doctor on a voluntary basis on are own choosing not the heavy hand of the fed govt making our personal private healthcare decisions /which is very frighting thought all taxpayers/i would urge the gop house and senators to unite against this pres obama govt run healthscare proposal that would run roughshod over our constituitional protections of a limited govt by our founding fathers

    Ok short version then

Multiply by 5 the current amount of public. Multiply by 8 the amount of current doctor nurses etc.
Divide by 8 the amount of cash given for military purposes.
Eliminate branded drugs at hospitals. The state should make and give no-branded medication.
Hospital director should be elected by the staff every 2 years and should have been a doctor at the same hospital for at least 3 years.
A peeple's commitee should be able to control the ways of a hospital director and be able to dismiss him if he commits certain undecent acts.
Give 100% coverage to all people except the ones with above 200K$

Americans pay more per person, much more, for health care than do citizens of ANY other country. Yet we have health care that is demonstrably the worst in the industrialized world - we're 49th in life expectancy (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2102rank.html), and have bad medical outcomes pretty much across the board.

As it happens, we're essentially the only industrialized nation in the world that does not have single-payer universal healthcare (a fancy name of Medicare for everyone).

My question - our health care is the most expensive and the worst in the industrialized world. Is this because we are the only one of these countries to not have Medicare for everyone? Or is it because Americans are somehow just special, and unable to achieve the low cost and high quality that every other industrialized nation has achieved?

    Mr. Grassley -

Hello. Please excuse my lack of respect and I will excuse your ignorance regarding the health care issue. In my opinion you have no business taking up "health care" issues when you are so ignorant regarding the use of marijuana as a medicinal herb. I am a 45 year old healthy, happy, responsible, professional male. I've personally tried doctor prescribed pharmaceuticals in the past for depression. Way-y-y to many side effects. In my 20+ years of smoking marijuana, I never turned to any harder drugs whatsoever. In fact, I know of no one who ever has. You are ignorant to the real health benefits of natural medicines. The real reason that marijuana is illegal is because it really makes people wise to the often times evil ways of government. While your health care efforts may seem noble, you'll never win over the American public with your comments today in the Washington Post blasting Attorney General Eric Holder & the Obama administration's common sense attitude about using medicinal marijuana. Thank you.

A lot of people dont understand that there are a lot of people who can afford health insurance but dont. And you have government programs that give children, whos parents can easily afford their own health insurance, health insurance and all the taxpayers have to pay for it. Now tell me is that right?

I understand that it is only for Americans to decide which type of health system they want.

But if this initiative is about collecting ideas, why " asking Americans what they think should be changed (or kept the same) ".

Because part of the problem in my opinion is that Americans have not been looking enough for inspiration in other countries system´s (many of which are better and cheaper at the same time).

I do not want nationalized health care!!! We cannot afford a decent plan. I am very unhappy with the prescription drug plan. I thought it was going to be great, however, after the first year, no insurance company offered coverage in the donut hole. I am covered for the first five months of the year and then I have to pay full price for my medications until the very last of December. I am much, much worse off than I was before the government took over. I would be willing to pay a higher premium for gap coverage but it is only available for generics. I take all the generics that I can. but most of my medications are not available in generic form. I do not qualify for any help and I feel that the government is telling me what I can afford to pay for prescription drug coverage. I know that similar things will happen if the government gets involved in providing health care. I AM VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THE PROSPECT.
Please find another way to help the people who need help. IT IS JUST NOT RIGHT TO TELL PEOPLE THAT THEY MUST PURCHASE INSURANCE. Some young people would rather put that money in a new car and that is what they do. Illegals should not receive health benefits. Help only those who cannot help themselves.
