Excellent news! Eh, wait a minute! Does this mean that we will have to wait another 5 years to be allowed to publish further 5 extra minutes? :) Cheers, guys!

Awesome news for regular users. I'm glad to see it. Though few have the patience to watch a video over 5 minutes let alone 10 or 15. It is nice if you are uploading footage of a long talk, less parts to break it up into.

Definitely one of the better changes on the site.

So in the matter of four years it took YouTube to go from special director accounts that enabled videos to be longer than 10 minutes to 10 minutes being the maximum to 15 minutes. On top of that, just about every video website has absolutely no time limit to uploaded videos.

So, thanks for trying, but let's hope that you guys can figure out thirty minutes before 2030. At least you guys listened to your ENTIRE community for once.

"We want videos longer than 10 minutes!"
"Okay, here you go! 5 more minutes!"

    It's kinda like:
"Mommy, I want to go to bed later than 9:00!"
    "Okay sweetie, how about 9:05?"

I don't think 5 extra minutes is what the millions of users meant when they asked for more than 10 minutes. Also, there's still users who can post longer than that because they signed up before the date the 10 minute limit was imposed.

On a related note, the new subscription bar at the bottom of the screen is annoying. There's a lot of people saying this.

This is quite meaningful. I've been planning on making some lengthy art, but this extension removes what had me hesitating.

But if the reason for doing this is faith in the ContentID, why isn't the limit completely removed? That would enable great creation of amateur movies would benefit the movie industry finding new talents. I personally would have use for making 25 minute works, but 15 is still an improvement.

So now that we've gotten longer time, does that mean higher audio quality and 60fps are next?

You increased the upload limit because the copyright tools were getting better?

Now please, replace that black bar with the old autoplay on the side. There was nothing wrong with it, and it actually let you turn off autoplay indefinately. I am glad you made this change with the time limit, but adding the bar really just made my happiness fall... It doesn't work efficiently, and the old autoplay was much more concealed to the point where if you wanted it, you could use it, but didn't have to turn it off on every single video you watch...

Fortunately, with FireFox and Adblock Plus, I was able to eliminate that annoying bar at the bottom of the screen though, so that's no longer an issue. Not for me anyway.

You guys keep pushing all of these "features" that most of us don't want, with no option to turn them off, but that doesn't seem to matter to you.

Why do you people keep messing about with the play list options? Now I have an amazingly annoying pop up at the bottom of my screen which doesn't seem to have the random player function.

I wonder what it is you people think is the appeal of your site?

But i think you should reserve those and all of the other partner advances to the youtube partner and not be letting all youtube users have them because, Partnership is something you have to work for and those were 2 major things i wanted when i become a partner

A great comment from Digg.com's gusterbear:

YouTube needs to stop being retarded. They could have time frames that fit the account type:

    Free:
    - Default user: 10 minutes
    - Pro User: 30 min
Paid (with a nominal yearly/monthly/length over X min fee)
    - Short film maker: 1 hr
    - Film maker: 2 hour
    etc.

Why they don't do this is beyond me. If a short film maker can pay YouTube a nominal fee for a certain number of 31-60 min uploads a year, they would, and YouTube would make money.

If an independent film maker could pay for posting up to 2 2-hour long films a year for a nominal fee, they would, and YouTube makes money.

I say nominal fee because if you can charge $20-$40 a year for ad-supported films, and more for ad-less films, you get more people and make money.

Why'd you change the homepage? There was nothing wrong with it and it was customizable. I didn't have to have the Recommended for You" section on my homepage. Except now it's there all the time and everyone's recent activity is being shoved in front of my face and everything is all jumbled together.(And I really don't see why the subscription's page is on a different page and not on top of everything else like normal)

And I REALLY don't like how that dumb bar constantly gets in the way. Especially with it opening up when you do nothing to trigger it. and then there's the autoplay that you have to turn off manually, and it dosen't stay off by default.

Come on, I thought you learned your lesson with this during the stupid beta player.

    Great stuff Youtube.Well Done!

I found creating some documentary videos they ran just over the ten minutes which meant editing out some of the good bits.

As for Copyright music I think some owners are a bit paranoid over this. I bought Pinnacle Studio and use the included tracks in the software for background music only to find some are flagged by Youtube for copyright. Yes I agree with Copyright in so much as I wouldn't use a James bond movie track in my video for instance. Some of the lesser known tracks I would of thought the viewer would relate it to the movie like it, and more than likely given the opportunity to buy it. Has to be a plus for the copyright owner. What do you think guys?

This is a STEP in the right direction. It's not 60-120min, which it SHOULD be, but it's an improvement. 30 minutes would be a far better compromise. 15 minutes is, frankly, insulting to Youtube customers. The queue bar is great, but it doesn't behave currently - needs to stay minimized unless actively clicked on. Autoplay seems to have a mind of its own and often does not stay on. Biggest problems currently: 1) each new video does not play full screen. 2) The previous resolution preference is ignored 3) Still no stop button to break the download. All three are glaring omissions easily fixed, if Youtube will simply employ better decision-makers less indifferent to its customer's concerns. I'm speaking from roughly 25 years experience supporting end-users in one form or another.

    Thanks for reading.

"PLEASE keep it at 15 minutes"
Please don't. Make it at least 30 minutes, or 60. Better yet, unlimited.

"wow ... nice too know , thanks to your new censorship system , somehow you were able to change the upload limit to 15minutes ! makes perfect sense ! i guess that means horray for censorship !!!"

Finally a good comment. People shouldn't be happy about just 5 minutes when it comes at this price.

Copyright is stupid, you shouldn't let those people ruin this site with that idiotic content ID system. Come on youtube, fight them. They are the enemies of mankind, don't be afraid of them, they are the bad guys, not your users. Start lobbying against unreasonable copyright laws immediately instead.

...What is this "comment as" thing? Why can't I comment using my YouTube ID???Why do I need another registration???? Lame...

    Hi youtube,

Thanks for upping the time limit.

    However..

PLEASE, PLEASE work on fixing that ANNOYING, new Auto Play bar. Many, MANY users do NOT like it, and cannot find a way to PERMANENTLY disable it (It keeps coming back).

Honest it would NOT be as ANNOYING if it did not AUTOMATICALLY 'pop-up" after clicking on a subcription video. If it just stayed as a minimized bar unitl called for, it would be quite tolerable.

Do a search on youtube on remvoing autoplay bar and you will see MANY dissatisfied youtube users coming up with work-arounds to disable it because it cannot be PROPERLY disabled.

We who follow the rules and do not abuse the system by uploading copyrighted content should have the video time limit removed if we formally request it and a review of our account shows that we are in good standing with no strikes against us! YouTube is punishing the entire community for the abuses of a relative few! Surely you can see my point here! Granted, YouTube is a free service and they have made GREAT strides in the past 5 years but this is one area where they are just backwards in their thinking. As for video types that are long form, things like independent film, lectures, teaching videos, community events, civic functions, faith based content and the like are all reasons why long form is important but does not necessarily fall under the heading of the partner paradigm with it's attendant monetization being a factor in attaining partner status.

I for one hope that YouTube is working on a review system just as I described for those of us who want to do long form without any interest in monetizing our content or where monetization would not be applicable or appropriate (IE faith based video) YouTube is a GREAT site with a lot of heart but sadly, they are falling behind the 8 ball on this issue!

    I LIKE THE GRAY BAR.
It's true, the autoplay ON by default was annoying, but now this is "fixed", and it's ok.

Moreover: I thought that the gray bar was just unnecessary, but 5 minutes ago i realized how it improves the "quick playlist" thing, aka the "queue", aka "quick list" (i dont' remember th old name of the feature, you know that list you creat clicking on the little plus on the thumbnauil of the videos). That was a weak feature of youtube, for several reasons, but now, thanks to the gray bar i must admit it's easier and more usefull to use.

Why not throwing away the limit for users who are at least 2 years on YouTube?
I mean, the ones which upload Copyrighted material are never longer than 1 year before suspension, so the fair people could have no limit at all, while the Copyright uploaders won't get it.

If you're giving us longer time limits on our videos, let us have a bigger file size at least. 4gb maybe? I can't post a vlog thats in 720p HD and is only 13 minutes :( Its 3.2gb

Stuart, you need to compress your videos better. I have a few full length 720p movies on my hard drive that are about 6-7GB. 13 minutes should not be that large. But, I agree that they need to increase the size limit.

Will you still allow grandfathered director accounts to upload longer videos?

I am so pumped that this has finally happened... A lot of the films I upload are over 10 minutes each which has now forced me to start making shorter ones. But now that it's been switched to 15... Feels like my dreams have come true!

YouTube needs to get better quality and chuck out the time limits. Then they'll be decent. Til they do that, I'm using Vimeo!
