I've been hand-typing my captions for the last year on all of my uploads - and I've received countless messages from people more than happy with their availability.

One thing though YouTube - for that that don't want captions... the fact that CC is on by default on all videos... it seems to be annoying my non-deaf audience. Now, *I'm* perfectly aware how to disable them, and permanently... but some/most people on this site aren't very bright.

I think auto-captioned videos should require approval by the video owner before they are used. It doesn't work very well, but is great tool for those that are willing to proof read them to correct the Mexico steaks.

Thanks for helping to ruin the livelihood of captioners, who have (like me) been making a decent living doing closed captions and subtitles in post-production houses. Yeah, yeah, I'm like the buggy whip makers after the automobile. But this was preceded by the migration of this work to India and other places, where $40 a week is a good living.

Just to note: these captions will always suck, because no machine will understand English completely. Non-native English speakers will not be attuned to the culture as much as necessary to get large parts of the dialog. And timing and fine-tuning have to be done by humans at least.

Aside from the usefulness for the deaf, captions make video searchable. Imagine, searching for a line of dialog you remember, but can't remember where you saw it, and you come up with the exact scene where that line was used. And tag film and you could come up with shots from a movie you saw as a kid. Finally, all this video on YouTube could be archived in a quickly retreivable way.

Technological change. Anybody want to buy my $13,000 workstation?

You should add a feature for partners where they can upload audio dubs of their current videos in different languages. Say I produced a video in English but I also have the same exact video spoken in Spanish. It would be useful if I can upload the Spanish mp3 and make the option available to switch the English audio with the Spanish audio on the player.

There are a couple of things YouTube could do to greatly improve accessibility.

As said earlier they need to provide a facility to allow alternate audio tracks.

Also annotations would be much, much more useful if the content owner had the option of switching them off by default.

This would allow the content owner to fill a video with transcription notes which are vital for accessibility. But because they could be switched off by default the notes would not bombard the majority of users.

Users that needed the transcription notes could turn them on just like they are able to turn on captions.

I think having these 2 would go a long way to making YouTube fully WC3 compliant.

This is one of the very few features YouTube has introduced the last couple of years that can truly be considered an upgrade. Not only is it extremely helpful to the hearing impaired but it's an option, not something YT has forced upon people.

WHY WHY WHY can't you follow this principle all the time? Bulletins, beta and, soon enough, video pages continue the freefall You Tube is on. Even something as simple as auto play, which I will forever argue is a glitch, should NEVER be forced upon people as a default option for anything. Yet, the most recent blog update on the reworked video page wants to force playlists to auto play unless the user shuts it off. This makes no sense.

Although I'm not hearing impaired and closed captioning is of no particular benefit to me, it's a rarity for You Tube...something about which you can be proud to have introduced. Use the principle of bettering the You Tube experience, not worsening it, and try doing the same all the time. Don't force change, don't aggravate viewers, don't keep downgrading. It's a small glimmer of hope that You Tube does have the ability to improve. I wish it would be the rule and not the exception.

Whose idea was it to make the CC thing pop up right over the volume and then slowly fade out? Every time I try to adjust the volume now this thing pops up over it because I accidentally swept my pointer a half a millimeter to the right of the volume control.

It's wonderful that Google/YouTube is providing automated captioning. However, there are now multiple states of captioning for videos, which can be pretty confusing to the viewer because of how Google/YouTube is dealing with the CC button.

    1. In the videos that were captioned by hand, the text for the CC button is confusing. Alternate text should describe the visual image for people with visual impairments, and that how most of us have unconsciously been trained to interpret alternate text. Instead, the text for the CC button sometimes says: "turn captions on" or "turn captions off." The text should be changed to say "captions are on" or "captions are off" for the actual status, which would be less confusing.

    2. A red CC button no longer means the captioning has been turned on, although it used to. Now it can mean that there is automated transcription available but the captions won't necessarily show unless the viewer turns them on. The color red for a CC button should only be used to indicate that captions are actually supposed to be showing. (This is what other video players are doing, like CNET.com.) A different color, like yellow or blue, could have been used to show that caption choices are available but not yet turned on. The color gray for the CC button is commonly understood to indicate that captions are turned off or not available.

    ok.

great idea, but from what I've seen on videos so far, really poor execution. I mean, don't get me wrong, I know this stuff is nowhere near easy to implement, but when it's that buggy, I laugh; someone who's hearing impaired on the other hand, loses out on the meaning of what's being said, and in some cases might think the captions are accurate when they're not.

so for that reason you might get back to work on your algorithm, because otherwise it's going to do harm, instead of good.

i think its great that YT is nringing closed captioning.ive been adding it to some of my videos (the shorter ones) & am pleased with the outcome.if auto captioning comes out i say EVEN BETTER.
some people out there probably dont like CC but im not one of those people.there r people out there that cant hear to well or even completely deaf so i think its wonderful that video owners r given this option to add captions for those who cant hear to well or at all.keep up the great work YOUTUBE on this technology.u have my vote on it.....

youtube I love that you are trying to make new changes and alot of it is for the better but I've notice a few things that have inconvenienced my video watching experience that wasn't a problem before this change.

The option to make the player smaller was quite useful to me at times where I had multiple windows up at once.

I love forming playlists of videos I watch frequently i.e. Angry video game nerd episodes. since the change though, I no longer have the option of making my playlist random, which is upsetting because I usually put on a playlist when I'm lying in bed and I just want my playlist to run randomly on its own. I dont want to manually click my videos out of order.

Also in the comment section you can no longer see how many thumbs ups or down a comment has. A minor issue but I as well as many people I know find enjoyment seeing the amount of thumbs ups and downs certian comments have. It is a very underappreciated tool. It makes you feel important when you recieve these thumbs ups and down, makes you feel socially accepted or an individualist when you rate another person's comment, and it adds a level of emotion to it, getting the watchers to debate and express opinion. Yes sometimes this can get out of hand but that is why uploaders can remove comments.

The last thing I can think of is it would be nice to be able to turn the autoplay off as a default setting. Now there may be a way to do this but I haven't found it yet.

Those are my thoughts on your changes as of now. I applaud your progression, I hope my input helped.

I very much appreciate the captioning, but here's how I use it:

    1. Every video we shoot is based on a written script. Can't complain about computer transcription if we type it ourselves.

    2. I then feed that script into YouTube, which takes care of the painstaking timing issues for me.

    3. I download the CC file it created, make any slight timing tweaks, then re-upload it as a proper .srt file in English.

Thanks, YouTube, for shaving a TON of time off my work!

This is a cool development by YouTube and I think the technology will continue to improve.

However, concurrent with this addition (rolling out to all users), it seems as if YouTube has set "always show captions" as the default for all users. While I can see that maybe this is a convenient way to draw attention to the new captioning features, content providers who have already been using captions now have their viewers wondering why they're being served captions all of a sudden.

YouTube, you could have (and should have) notified users about this.

They don't capture every word in verbatim I think they get about 75% right. What they don't consider is that words are spoken differently- you can get a Noo Yawk accent or a Texas twang in one word and the captioning will not get it right. Other than that-its a step in the right direction- its about time the deaf/HOH people are included! :o)

Greetings and first of all congratulate YouTube due to initiatives such as subtitling.
However, I must indicate a problem with the new presentation of the subtitles on the main page of each channel on YouTube.
For example, in the Channel UNED:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/uned
appears by default when a video with closed captions, there is no way to leave.
Only when you go to the individual page for that video is subtitled in the traditional way.
    Example:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtQYeS27HOQ
Although I reported the problem still unanswered.
Please. I think it needs better media from YouTube to discuss such incidents and getting a timely response.
    Thank you.

I have been creating carefully translated captions using overstream.net, but Youtube has now blocked it. Youtube's tools DO NOT allow me to create the same level of high-quality captions that I created for my website babelsongs.com using Overstream, which allowed viewers to see Roman character transliterations together with English captions, that usually displayed below wide-screen video without overlaying it. Other copyright holders often authorized captioning and were thrilled with my work, which is now disabled. Please continue working on your captioning tools, AND PLEASE STOP blocking overstream.net from adding high-quality captions to Youtube videos.

I never believed Google will publish such a bad product even beta version. For example, in one of the videos, they say "seventy six percent". The speech recognition algorithm somehow omits the "seventy". Eventually it is translated to Hebrew to SIX percent. To my knowledge, there is a bit of difference between 76% and 6%. I have showed one of the Hebrew translations of the automatic captions to a person who doesn't know English. This was really funny situation.

How about you stop "improving" as you say since the old YouTube is way better. First you force down on us the crappy and buggy layout which also was quite unattractive. Now you completely change the way a video plays and add captions by default which is annoying to manually disable. All your doing is making more users fed up. I know about 15 people who have left YouTube due to these stupid so called improvements. And this is only 15 I know, imagine all the hundreds I dont know who have left. Fine, if you want to bring in changes, go ahead, but give us the choice of what we like so people happy with the current one can stick with it. It's not too much to ask. YouTube is also starting to become a form of advertising now. The last thing users want is for it to turn into some sort of TV channel. You guys better start answering the queries us enraged users have and take action upon it. I honestly do not support Google anymore. Keep all the users happy in the future if you dont want to risk losing many users.

You should strike a deal with overstream.net. I had captioned many YouTube videos for deaf and hard of hearing friends (and the general public) before you decided to close off video access to third parties. This means, taking into account all the users of overstream, there are possibly hundreds or thousands of videos that are already well captioned, and wouldn't require correction, that are there for the asking...and if you allow access, overstream users, like myself would continue to generate more and more of them, at no cost to YouTube.

I really enjoyed the art of captioning detailed videos...you may not see it as an art...you may not care whether it is an art...but, there is a beauty to perfectly timed, accurate captioning. May I please have it back?

I agree with the above poster. I am happy that Youtube is taking proactive steps to making their videos accessible to everyone. However, the auto-captioning still has its flaws and Overstream has a user friendly interface that has been implemented for years. Please make Overstream exempt from the third-party blocked access enforcement.

Overstream and Youtube both have similar goals. Collaborating with Overstream is unlikely to conflict with Youtube's long-term goals.

captioning is good. auto-anything is not-so-good. i have currently have 33 videos that i manually added captions with the help of overstream. the majority of these fall into the music category. live music is going to be pretty hard to get right with auto-caption. hell, it is hard enough for me sometimes! many people have told me they enjoy that i put the captions. please allow overstream to work again! unless of course there is some magical tool on youtube that has the same functionality. i am willing to give the auto features a shot, but so far any it has either failed or will show garbage like "i...i..." out of several minutes of a song. please allow overstream.net to work. does anyone know of an offline tool i can use to create caption files from my original videos in the meantime?

I have got to say, while this whole captioning business is great for improving accessibility, everything else you've changed over the past few days/weeks has actually made site accessibility in general WORSE.

First of all, the removal of the multi-uploader. I have had the normal uploader consistently fail on me, randomly stopping videos, or deciding to fiddle with the descriptions or decide not to upload a video privately when I set it to. A friend of mine has also had one of her videos come up as a duplicate even though it was a brand new video. The removal of the multi-uploader, with no attempts to fix the one we're now stuck with, is a MASSIVE step backwards.

Secondly, the new video layout is HORRIBLE. Everything's all bunched together, and here's where I believe it's at direct odds with the captions. While captions improve things for the deaf, the severely reduced font size for the description and comments makes it harder for those with poor eyesight, not to mention that all the divider lines have gone, so all the comments are bunched together in a big text wall, and the indenting for responses has gone too, making it near impossible to gauge what's a response to what. It's a visual mess. The disappearance of creator avatars next to descriptions (like there were before) also contributes to this general ugliness.

The auto-play feature is pointless, and also horribly executed. The box is also glitched, so any attempt to see if there were options to stop the videos auto-playing or to change the order the videos do auto-play (the latter of which being the only thing that could make this feature useful) was met with an error message.

Not to mention the millions upon millions of other random glitches the site is now throwing up at me, making me feel like this whole new design is still in its beta stages (not helped by the laughable "transcripts" of the auto-caption). The site has become a chore to navigate.

Seriously, while the captions (despite their currently broken state) are a step forward, everything else feels like a step back. And judging by some the comments here, I am clearly not alone in thinking this. These issues really need to be addressed.

The comments were fine like they were. What you've done is made comments less interesting to read as it now looks very cluttered and all over the place. The comments section is one of the things that I read as you usually have someone posting some sort of funny comments however you've totally ruined this experience with this overhaul.

I don't want it to seem like I'm complaining because I'm not; I'm just giving feedback.

If you can please get comments as organised as it was before, so maybe per every comment there is some sort of border to identify each comment that would be great. The thumbs up and thumbs down should also be something permanent next to the username in the comments page. (Just like it is now if you don't go to "Read all comments" etc.

    Cheers.

That attitude demonstrates unilateral power from YouTube.

Useful services like Overstream are blocked, and I have a few videos on my blog that are down, thanks to this shameful act from YouTube.

All the time I invested translating the videos are wasted, my visitors can't benefit from its content, and I'll have to go through a lot of processes to put it back on track.

YouTube is showing an arrogant and despickable lack of respect to their users.

This is a great move in the right direction. It's great that you can download your YouTube captions, fix them, then re-upload them to have perfect captions. I also use the YouTube captions and import them into MovCaptioner for the Mac so I can export as other caption formats such as SCC (for ipods and broadcasting), Flash, embedded QT captions, and also text transcripts as well. Makes for an easier work flow.

YouTube (and Google) has long been a flagship of the social importance of free content sharing and flow on the internet. Blocking Overstream (and similar) is against every principle you should stand for. Stop doing it!

Although Google's work on auto-caption is cheerable and admirable, it does not follow that you should block other efforts in the same direction. It is, by principle, plain wrong and something that we are not used to see in Google - you are not Microsoft! Other than that, you are destroying thousand of work hours of individuals that have been using Overstream with various purposes, including educational.

    You should seriously rethink it.

Hi. it is nice that you have added such a project, however it is not working (at least not the way it shoudl be). the camtioning is about 5% accurate. i captioned the obama speech about iraq war and it went like he was talking that soldiers do that and that and the caption went like "i cannot die" i almost fell of the chair. the caption feature is better than any commedy, cheers!
now about the layout, you already ruined user prifiles with that "new" profile that shows one video and pretty musch decides that everything else is worthless. those that were around few years ago when it changed should know. now you ruined the video window too. your "copyright" bot has limited the amount movies could actually be edited (you cant put music on your video even though it woudl improve it and give free advertisement for the bank, which is idiocy, i though google was innovative, not one of those that are stuck in 20th century, you didnt had problem with google books now did you)
so to sum all that, google is no longer the best video portal. it may be the biggest, but there are bunch of better ones.
oh and why i cant "comment as" just youtube account? there is no such option so i ahve to choose google account. another stupid merging idea, your going the sihtty road microsoft is going.

I have problem loading my videos though after you change this...Either the video loads fully until the end. Then when I click to replay it, it wouldn't work and RE-loads itself. Another problem I encounter is that some shows it loads full but when I click to play it, it only plays for a few seconds then just stop right there. Then when I try to push the circle button back with mouse, the whole thing stops! I can't play it with the play button and it just doesn't move! Please fix this! TT

New layout sucks! Especially the comment section. There needs to be borders. Borders make things easier to read, not harder. Bring back the stars. So what if people only rate the videos they like? Youtube, you have taken a major step backwards with your "upgrade."

I have been creating carefully translated captions using overstream.net, but Youtube has now blocked it. Youtube's tools DO NOT allow me to create the same level of high-quality captions that I created for my classes using Overstream, Please continue working on your captioning tools, AND PLEASE STOP blocking overstream.net from adding high-quality captions to Youtube videos.

Another option for YouTube would be to buy overstream.net and to make it a part of YouTube.

    Hi,

I am not very satisfied with youtube lately. I translated several long videos (which I didn't own, but I asked & got permission from owner, Paula Gloria) into German through overstream.net which worked nicely, but only for two weeks, until youtube changed its API.

It would be great to see improved support for Captions. As others have indicated, the accuracy leaves a lot to be desired.Aside from the usefulness for the deaf, captions make video searchable.

I HATE the captions and I HATE the new design!!! All of this makes my coumputer run far much slower than before, and the fast speed on youtube was the only reason I prefered it before! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take back the old version or give me the option to choose whether I want the new or the old looks and whether I want to see those awful captions at all!!!!!!!!

Once the auto-caption system is complete, there needs to be an easy way to edit the captions to provide more accurate CCs. Also the ability to align the captions left, right and center to show who is speaking in a particular scene.
