Sounds like a good feature. I probably won't be using it since I'm only 16 and don't have any kids, but it seems like a way to temporarily turn it off would be helpful. For example, lets say my friend sends me a funny video ridden with profanity, and lets say I have safety mode turned on. Perhaps I could enter my password and watch the video without turning off safety mode? I know this is the system many cable and satellite providers use; they require their users to imput a parental code if they set up parental controls and want to watch a rated R movie.
The safety feature is good, however, really needs to be expanded to deal with a wider audience. For instance, establishments dealing with children (education, youth clubs etc...) will need to be able to enable this on mass.
This is usually achieved via the use of query strings (like a Google Search).
It should be possible to enable this via query string and not just account settings.

Maybe it's just me, but I am a little bit frightened by the phrase "video that contains graphic violence such as a political protest". Any idea why a political protest must be graphic and violent? I would not think so...
It's a good idea for parents with younger kids, however you should also give video uploaders an option on if videos should be allow to be watched in safety mode or not.

Given that you have created this "opt in" safety mode, is there any chance that you can also change the YouTube feature that hides comments to videos that are rated under -5 so that feature is an "opt in" feature as well? I don't mind when YouTube gives people an option to avoid seeing things they don't want to see, but it would be more in line with YouTube's promotion of free speech to always make those "opt in" options.

Nice job on screwing this up already. Might have been good to check to make sure that it was rolled out everywhere before announcing it worldwide and to broadcast media. Now there are a bunch of people looking for a button that doesn't exist yet.

Well, as long as this means a YouTube with virtually all commercial music videos and the vast majority of the big time partners' videos eliminated, I'm all for it. Why do I feel that's not going to happen?
That said, I agree that this site features very little content that would appeal to an adult audience[*], so better turn it into a dedicated website for children now and be done with it.
[*] It's a common misconception that 'adult' means 'horny.' Actually, and for the purposes of the paragraph above, I would like it to be understood as 'in possession of one's own thoughts.'
This feature is completely useless. Anyone, even kids, can find their way around this in less than 2 minutes. Parents, try monitoring and supervising your kids instead. Much more useful and you never know, you may actually find you enjoy spending some time with them.
Before all the trolls start, yes, I am a parent. I also practice what I preach. Try it sometime. It is not Google's or YouTube's responsibility to keep your kids from seeing things you don't want them to, it's yours.

A step in the right direction, but...what would be really useful for schools is a safe URL such as www.safeyoutube.com where Safety Mode was turned on all the time, without the option to turn it off. Then we could add this to our whitelist whilst blocking normal YouTube.
I want great control over what is said as comment in my videos. it's one thing to opt out, but the comments are still there, so I have to remove the ability to comment and hurt everyone because the kiddies figure they can say and do as they please and not get in trouble.
This is a excellent addition to the site! It will allow people to control what others on their computer sees on Youtube. Or a way to filter out content they don't want to see themselves.
I think another thing that that would be cool to implement into the site is the option to make your videos 18+ only accessible if you wanted to. Granted I don't have any videos that are 18+ material myself. But, I know others do and would allow them to sort of "flag" their own videos for being "inappropriate" for teens before teens have the chance to see them themselves before flaggings go through.
That would mean the video maker would be responsible for who views their own videos. Not the viewers who flag them. Just my thoughts.

No offense but i've been noticing more and more than ther are ALOT of dirty and lustful videos on the servers and it's really starting to drive me away from here and more towards Vimeo perhaps. Finally - this has been needed for a while now. As a parent of 2 young kids, this really helps.
But can you give more detail about the categories you are blocking in safety mode and how you are assigning that to each video? Is that done by people or by some automated method? Thanks.
I just turned on safety mode but was able to view a video that showed violence. Sounds like you guys have the right idea but haven't yet thought this through. Web filtering companies have dealt with this for years (with parental control features blocking categories of websites/webpages). You might want to consider talking to them about how to do this a bit better.
I think it's a great idea. However if you allow your kids to watch Youtube video's create a "Kid Zui" account for them. It's basically the internet for kids. So instead of them clicking on IE or the Firefox icon, click on the "K" icon for Kid Zui. My 6 year old son has his own computer and loves it! The parents get weekly emails on what they view and do with the free version of it.
Another step towards totalitarian censorship. Awesome. Since when is a political protest regarded as graphic violence? Also, if people are too weak to take the news with uncensored footage, they should avoid news altogether. Full news or no news. YouTube is a content host not (or not supposed to be) an authority on what constitutes 'graphic violence'
Good now i can censor that B.S. stuff like, Lady Gaga, and the other bands I don't give a rats bottom for. Not to mention censor the random "Recommended For You" thing that gives me Hannah Montana for watching the playthrough for Bioshock 2.

I just turned on the "Safety Mode" and the first thing that pops up on my featured video screen are videos labeled as - boobs, sexy !!!! I would imagine the filter is set on video labels as well. Looks like someone is thinking about safety but needs some help in determining how to implement it.
Honestly, I really don't like the idea. Cencorsing YT will make some poeple annoyed and will make the affected ones watch "nasty movies" at other sites instead. Won't really accomplish anything ... Good PR with todays oh-so-responsible parents though I guess.
I just found the safe mode today. And I would like to see an option to allow only what we want to see like, Our Friends video, and maybe our favorites. Ok, and what stops my kids from just turning it back off? password protect this feature or its pointless, allow certain IP to always have the feature enabled and any request from that IP address with have it enabled, this allows schools, and work place to use youtube without fear of the employees or students watching unrelated or entertainment purpose content. it also allows for whole households to have the featured enabled regardless of user account. because what stops my kids from signing into their own accounts, and just turning it off. this reminds me of how websites use to control content..with a question of date of birth, and thats how content was filtered, what did kids do? just make an account thats above the age restriction. i hope you read this!
Youtube censors profanity sexual content on videos; and every form of profanity google could think of in the comments. There are so many better websites for video-hosting. The only reason youtube is still around is because celebrities and politicians have vindicated it and select users get chump change for making videos.
Why can I see recommended for me? Adults should police their children, not Youtube...Porn should be sold openly. After all it is not an illegal business, but not given to us almost as subliminal message so you get hook a little at a time, that is what is wrong about porno, but they are not different, than other business. My two cents.
I'm glad to see this feature offered. I have been on and seen an image come up unexpectedly that was inappropriate for my young children (who just happened to come by at that moment). I wasn't even searching for anything related to the video that came up. Of course, that's part of being online. :-)
POLITICAL PROTEST -- the blog mentions "poitical protest or war" and we have to remember in some non-democratic or pseudo-democratic countries like Rwanda, North Korea and Kenya (not picking on Africa) protests do in fact turn violent. Sometimes it's the protestors, sometimes it's the government..sometimes both.
PORNOGRAPHY -- I thank God pornography is NOT sold openly. I don't want to see ads and promos for that everywhere I turn, and it would make it hard for me to shield my kids from it if it was on various magazine racks and billboards on a regular basis.

Who are you kidding, YouTube? There's inappropriate stuff all over you no matter how hard you wave your Community Guidelines. Not only do you fail to acknowledge how ineffective your old system is for keeping YouTube relatively "clean," but you roll out this broken filter option that still can't manage to keep the "Sexting On My iPhone" and "Getting Oral" out of the Featured Videos panel on the mainpage. What I'D like to opt out of is having these Featured Videos on my mainpage at all - I avoid looking at them anyway because a good portion of the time I see half-naked bent-over girls instead of anything that looks even remotely interesting. At least let me "x" the videos out of there so I can keep the page loaded rather than having to reload (which might prove pointless) or go somewhere else to avoid an embarrassing moment with someone looking over my shoulder.

Ok. I just discovered this feature yesterday and it has done nothing but annoy me. I wasn't able to find any of the videos I wanted to watch with the safety mode on, even though they had nothing inappropriate in them. I can't even turn the darn thing off because I don't have a youtube account. I had to use my friend's account to watch the videos. I am not a parent or a teacher, and I don't care about the inappropriate videos because I will never click on them. This feature is just a hindrance to my youtube experience. I know this feature had good intentions, but what good is this feature to the mass public? This is the internet. People will post inappropriate things. If you don't like it, ignore it. Deal with it. To the parents out there; it's your responsibility to monitor what your kids are doing, not youtube. I thought youtube was all for freedom of expression? But I guess that's not true anymore considering that now half the videos are considered "inappropriate" to the general public. And how is this supposed to give us more control? You either have it on or you have it off. There are no options.

Sorry but i find it highly annoying and it feels like it blocks way too much content; even harmless stuff. For example I was searching for an old Disney Song and i couldnt even listen to a Jonas brothers rendition of it(Don't judge me). In my opinion, the safety mode needs to be fixed because it is blocking way too much stuff and it is very irritating.

What about the app??? There is no safety control on it at all and it has to stay on for youtube to work on the browser. Why would you choose to use the browser when it is limited if you can go to the app? Add safety controls to the app as well!

please, I have this case, my safety mode is " on " and when I try to change it to " OFF" the ( "save" + "Save and lock Safety Mode on this browser") are not active.
I tried many times for many days and logout and in and delete all the chrome and IE cookies with no any hope.

ReplyDeleteBut can you give more detail about the categories you are blocking in safety mode and how you are assigning that to each video? Is that done by people or by some automated method? Thanks.
I just turned on safety mode but was able to view a video that showed violence. Sounds like you guys have the right idea but haven't yet thought this through. Web filtering companies have dealt with this for years (with parental control features blocking categories of websites/webpages). You might want to consider talking to them about how to do this a bit better.

ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea. However if you allow your kids to watch Youtube video's create a "Kid Zui" account for them. It's basically the internet for kids. So instead of them clicking on IE or the Firefox icon, click on the "K" icon for Kid Zui. My 6 year old son has his own computer and loves it! The parents get weekly emails on what they view and do with the free version of it.

Also, if people are too weak to take the news with uncensored footage, they should avoid news altogether. Full news or no news. YouTube is a content host not (or not supposed to be) an authority on what constitutes 'graphic violence'
Good now i can censor that B.S. stuff like, Lady Gaga, and the other bands I don't give a rats bottom for. Not to mention censor the random "Recommended For You" thing that gives me Hannah Montana for watching the playthrough for Bioshock 2.

ReplyDeleteI just found the safe mode today. And I would like to see an option to allow only what we want to see like, Our Friends video, and maybe our favorites. The Youtube Featured Videos are pretty discusting sometimes, it's either Sexual, Dirty, or Stupid, or violence. We should have options, or a check box, to set what we want to show on the page, and is cached in the browser to always stay, unless we delete cookies, or change the content.

Ok, and what stops my kids from just turning it back off? password protect this feature or its pointless, allow certain IP to always have the feature enabled and any request from that IP address with have it enabled, this allows schools, and work place to use youtube without fear of the employees or students watching unrelated or entertainment purpose content. it also allows for whole households to have the featured enabled regardless of user account. because what stops my kids from signing into their own accounts, and just turning it off. this reminds me of how websites use to control content..with a question of date of birth, and thats how content was filtered, what did kids do? just make an account thats above the age restriction. i hope you read this!

Youtube censors profanity sexual content on videos; and every form of profanity google could think of in the comments. There are so many better websites for video-hosting. The only reason youtube is still around is because celebrities and politicians have vindicated it and select users get chump change for making videos.

After all it is not an illegal business, but not given to us almost as subliminal message so you get hook a little at a time, that is what is wrong about porno, but they are not different, than other business. I wasn't even searching for anything related to the video that came up. Of course, that's part of being online. :-)

Sometimes it's the protestors, sometimes it's the government..sometimes both.
PORNOGRAPHY -- I thank God pornography is NOT sold openly. I don't want to see ads and promos for that everywhere I turn, and it would make it hard for me to shield my kids from it if it was on various magazine racks and billboards on a regular basis.

Who are you kidding, YouTube? There's inappropriate stuff all over you no matter how hard you wave your Community Guidelines. Not only do you fail to acknowledge how ineffective your old system is for keeping YouTube relatively "clean," but you roll out this broken filter option that still can't manage to keep the "Sexting On My iPhone" and "Getting Oral" out of the Featured Videos panel on the mainpage. What I'D like to opt out of is having these Featured Videos on my mainpage at all - I avoid looking at them anyway because a good portion of the time I see half-naked bent-over girls instead of anything that looks even remotely interesting. At least let me "x" the videos out of there so I can keep the page loaded rather than having to reload (which might prove pointless) or go somewhere else to avoid an embarrassing moment with someone looking over my shoulder.

I hope this works as I thought I had parental controls but some how youtube videos of naked women were played by my 11yr old son. I was looking to complain when I found this. I pray it works
ReplyDeleteOk. I just discovered this feature yesterday and it has done nothing but annoy me. I wasn't able to find any of the videos I wanted to watch with the safety mode on, even though they had nothing inappropriate in them. I can't even turn the darn thing off because I don't have a youtube account. I had to use my friend's account to watch the videos. I am not a parent or a teacher, and I don't care about the inappropriate videos because I will never click on them. This feature is just a hindrance to my youtube experience.

Deal with it. To the parents out there; it's your responsibility to monitor what your kids are doing, not youtube.
I thought youtube was all for freedom of expression? But I guess that's not true anymore considering that now half the videos are considered "inappropriate" to the general public. And how is this supposed to give us more control? You either have it on or you have it off. There are no options.

ReplyDeleteSorry but i find it highly annoying and it feels like it blocks way too much content; even harmless stuff. For example I was searching for an old Disney Song and i couldnt even listen to a Jonas brothers rendition of it(Don't judge me). In my opinion, the safety mode needs to be fixed because it is blocking way too much stuff and it is very irritating.

I tried many times for many days and logout and in and delete all the chrome and IE cookies with no any hope.
