"Susan Boyle - Britain's Got Talent" video being the Most Watched YouTube videos was expected but "Linkin Park - New Divide" not featuring in the Most Watched music videos on YouTube list was shocking...
i think it would be cool to see categories broken down into special interest. for example, the most watched videos related to the LGBT community, the most watched videos related to politics/news, etc. also would be nice to see by region.
I don't know how YouTube compiled its stats, but one of Susan Boyle's fans has made it a special hobby to keep track of all YouTube hits for Susan, in various categories. Her total (which she can document) is about 380,000,000 ~ about 3 times the number noted above.
I'd like to believe that there's a category for content original to YouTube, and not just regurgitated clips from other sites, however, that doesn't seem to be the case. So, my proposed category for next year would be; Original YouTube Content.
This is oftopic but I will rant here since Youtube is too chickenshit to do anything against false DMCA filings.
Youtube does not stand up for their users, when they are falsely accused of breaking the DMCA. The DMCA is so constructed that the accused is guilty untill he can proof his innocence. Youtube makes it too hard to counter these claims and invests no effort at all in protecting legimate users against malicious and illegal conduct.
Legally Youtube is not required to actively protect users from false claims (or even investigate if the claim is correct), yet they are legally required to take down any video that gets a DMCA breach claim on their ass. Yet by doing so, Youtube scoffs the users that make Youtube great. And it would be nice if Youtube got the balls and says "no" to a false DMCA claim.
At least Youtube should make it easier to file counter claims, because now, it is so very hidden, new users would at a loss to what to do against this kind of atrocious breaching of the DMCA. False claiming of a breach of the DMCA is illegal and should be dealt with.
This is awesome. The main suggestion I have is to make the lists LONGER. I mean 5 is too little, don't you think so? Make it, like, top 20 and let us have a bigger view at what's been going on throughout the year.
Also, it would be interesting to see at least top 3 videos from each category.
Lastly, make it clear whether these are "new videos" made in 2009 only, or from all-time. Because it is possible for a video made in another year to get unexpectedly high views and get into the top list.

On a "completely-unrelated-to-this-post" note I want to thank Youtube for putting the little "x"s on videos that show up in the subscription box. I'm under 18 so whenever a video got flagged in the past it wouldn't go away and would stay in my subscription box. Very annoying, but now it's fixed :)
How the winners songs were chosen? There are lots of clips that appear twice due to a number of sources. Are all the similar movies add to one result. Or you just checked what is the most viewed movie.

The look on the faces of the judges and the people in the audience when Susan Boyle opened her mouth and let out those rich and vibrant sounds was worth a million. You could just see the skepticism drain from their faces! When I start feeling like I've made a mistake by going back to college, I watch it! I'm 57.
We use the most viewed and related videos every month to construct a video dataset to do the data mining. Each month is available except September. But we could not access the YouTube during that period (china block the YouTube) and could not use any VPN service. Now, we want to complement our dataset and come here to search for help. Thanks!

I was just at youtube watching party in the u.s.a. and the number of hits got me curious - it's already over 64 million, for the original video. I googled youtube's top videos for 2009, that I ended here.
To account for the top videos would be difficult since number of views change, as we speak. Also, multiple uploads of one video are available.
I have one suggestion though...
For the top viewed video, instead of just considering the number of views to date (or in total), maybe it is also correct to consider the average number of views, per month. Of course, the recency of the launch of a video will affect the no. of hits it got. Likely, if a music video is uploaded in june, it will get more total views at the end of the year, than if it were uploaded in november.
"Most Watched" category would be great. But it should offer more. e.g. we should be able to find most watched video in any category, year, genre e.t.c.
if bob gordon is the inbreed that is responsible for the cat-killing funniest car commercial , then somebody ought to ban the auto-channel from the internet, or at least stick his head through a partially open sun roof. Ill volunteer, if you tell me where red neckerson lives. that is one sick commercial.

How fantastic it is, that not one of the most viewed and searched items are of any importance at all. They are so irrelevant that it causes pains in my head trying to figure out the logic of wanting to be brain washed by that nonsense.
I find the videos that I post "do not" fall into the categories offered. Therefor I only get exposed to people who are already searching for my key words. I think the data you are getting above is just showing the reflection of the mainstream TV stories. Youtube should see the real value in finding out the trends that are growing in the marginalized view points. That is it's real power, innovation and potential. Who cares if people search for Michael Jackson when he dies...no duh the networks bombard 24/7 what do you expect?
I wish youtube would reactivate suspened accounts. or at least give reason for why they were suspended. othe than that... congrats on internet domination.

Of course, the recency of the launch of a video will affect the no. of hits it got. Likely, if a music video is uploaded in june, it will get more total views at the end of the year, than if it were uploaded in november.
Just a thought.
"Most Watched" category would be great. But it should offer more.
