Why don't you state the quality ond type of files you support?
that way we won't video with quality that will be downscaled.

It's a good idea. The world really does need to upgrade its measly internet connections though. Everyone should be able to watch in HD. I know I can smoothly, and I don't even have a particularly fast broadband.

Okay, so HQ works, but there's one problem: When I watch a video in HQ, it gets stretched out vertically (instead of wide screen bars), and looks really weird, but clicking the little 'view in smaller size' button fixes that; still, I don't want to have to do that every time, and some videos don't have that little button.

    Fix it, pleeaaase!

Looking carefully at your series of Hillary's pictures captured over the last 10-15 years, it appears that Mrs. Clinton has had significant plastic surgery or at the very least, a lot of botox. I wonder if this is a response to her lack of appeal to youthful America. Has she actually come clean with this information and why isn't anyone on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, etc. asked her about this or called her on it. Is she once again getting a free pass from these guys who always seem to support Hillary (especially in her constant racial attacks) and her unwillingness to be honest on her personal wealth and not revealing her W2s, when McCain and Obama have come clean with these and other things that the Clintons are hiding, waiting until she has the Democratic nomination and is assured of her candidacy? So many lies, so little time for before Americans wake up to her tyranny! I can see this clearly and I'm not even a Democrat!

Are they FINALLY going to start supporting STEREO audio, instead of converting 99% of the audio tracks to mono??

I was REALLY happy yesterday when the "YouTube" bug/logo was gone from embedded videos, but some bastard put it back today! The logo's already in the bar under the player window, it doesn't need to also be on top of the picture we're trying to watch!

It IS an improvement. I can see the difference on my recent uploads. I JUST did an upload recorded with the Logitech 900 HD PC Cam. It was done with the default capture tool and the default settings for 640x480. The capture output seems preset to WMV file format (I usually use DivX). I uploaded it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jY1S8dl6bXA) and you can DEFINITElY see a difference. But STILL has a way to go to catch up to some of the other sites (Veoh, Vimeo). Thanks YouTube! More, please... :)

the HQ encoding seems to mess-up with videos that are not the standard 4:3. In stead of black bars to compensate 16:9 to accustom the player, the image is stretched out vertically.

Slightly off topic, but I noticed the YouTube watermark was gone on Friday (3/14) and now it's back. Bummer. Embedded videos look much better without the watermark. Can we lose it YouTube?

Especially now that the Share button is branded, it's YouTube on top of YouTube for embedded videos. Isn't that overkill?

Please remove the watermark. Your users will be grateful.

    Thanks for considering my views.

Yes, once again LOSE THE WATERMARK! The YouTube logo's already in the bar under the picture, and no matter what the idiots running TV nowadays may say, this practice has never been and never will be acceptable! The only reason I don't disable embedding on my videos is because you can click on them and go to the YouTube site to see them with a clean picture.

And PLEASE make stereo audio the standard!

My question is: If I can add the "&fmt=18" code and have my videos play in higher resolution and stereo, why doesn't YouTube just automatically set my videos to that? In other words, if it can be accomplished manually why not just build it into the system for all videos? Or give a choice to the video uploader? Thanks.

I have known about this for a long time, before they added the feature to the the actual site, thats why i created a modification for firefox for it to automatically switch to HD

Personally i can't see much off a difference, i know people have posted pictures of: "proof" that it is better, but my graphics card is top of the range, and i have 4 of the most expensive hi-quality screens around.

I must ask though for a download feature to be added, so people can download youtube videos without having to use sites/addons or programs to do it for them. Would be good if there was a choice of: mp4/mp3(sound only) and avi

    Thanks alot, good work youtube

I wondered why YouTube does not have the option of downloading videos into the Windows Media Player. I find it time consuming to see videos and not be able to work on the computer at the same time. I like the feature of Mini Mode that the Windows Media player has that allows watching and using the computer at the same time. Would YouTube be able to accomodate that?

Hi, i know my comment is irrelevant here, but i tried to contact YT for specific thing which is a suggestion, why not adding a 'points' feature for users on YT, so they get points for adding videos, rating, commenting, ..etc and then reward them in a way, dont know how, but its really good, and can be an encouraging way to the users to collaborate, and even to sign up! what else? yeah, to put a contact or link for suggestions, in YT 'Contact Us' page!

    YouTube:

I first learned of the HQ thing from posts talking about a "hack" where you'd add "&fmt=18" (or "&fmt=6") to the URL and voila! HQ picture!

Well, I found, at first, that "&fmt=18" worked more than "&fmt=6" (which didn't really work at all, for me) AND there was an added bonus: the stereo sound from the original upload was passing through.

I checked several videos which I knew had stereo, including 2 of mine... the &fmt=18 add-on brought a HQ picture and passed the stereo.

Now, on Monday morning (17th March), the &fmt=18 does nothing... and &fmt=6 gets HQ but NO STEREO!

What's going on? Yes, I now know about the setting in "Account" which tries to force HQ video playback by default, but so far it doesn't really work. A few (mainly YouTube Partner) videos default to HQ (no stereo) but most don't.

Also, adding &fmt=18 generates a "Click here for a lower quality..." message below the video in question - BUT the video is actually still low quality to begin with. BTW: the "shrink picture" button seems to only work with low quality mode videos (which is an instant way to tell which is being shown) - it does nothing on HQ videos.

WHY DID YOU TAKE BACK THE STEREO PASS-THROUGH?

Also, are you going to start charging people for HQ or stereo? My guess is yes, but maybe you'll restore stereo sound with the HQ picture and keep it free(?)! I hope so!!

YouTube HD could take a hint from soft porn site www.aziani.com , free video samples . The viewer stops Play while the video downloads. When the download is complete, the video can be played smoothly.
How about more stereo sound while we're at it?

finally :) there has been so much discussion about how to film to get a better quality specially on youtube :) I allways wanted the datarate goes up and the implementation of h.264 (really hope that´s next)

My idea is that the uploader should be able to define the "quality" settings of your encoding progress. just add a "encode this in HD" button to each video and people who are really interested in this will hit that button. over time the neccessary videos will have been reencodet :)

thanks a lot and have fun

PS: please reencode my videos in HD if you find the time ;)

    From the videohelp forum:

I think that should be better to search for another possible flash based video sharing site that allows H.264 + AAC .mp4 uploads without transcoding/downgrading, because I don't have the time or resources to upload almost lossless quality audio & video material

Exactly. Either that or we should find out how to bypass YT's converters (like before with the 349 kbit/s limit for FLV). Or YT should offer the option to use/download the upload in its original format.

Why can't Google/YouTube just give us the EXACT specs their site/player requires, then we will gladly use that. Give us the resolution, codec, and max bitrate values and we're all happy campers. They can easily write a check for certain values in each upload, and leave the upload alone if the user did it right.

The h.264 aac is quite a step up from the old flv and the upgrade is much appreciated. I realize this is at the testing stage........................

    2 suggestions:
Please adjust your audio level control sw if you must use it. The processed audio has clipped peaks with some brief distortion and sounds like a compressor with slow attack time. This is most noticable at the beginning of clips with several seconds of low level audio, and then with the onset of music or other sound, there's a brief burst of distortion followed by a noticable reduction in level. Level control will not improve the experience, IMO............................

Also, please remove the fixed 30fps frame rate. Encode using the source frame rate to retain smooth cadence.

To anybody else who was bothered because they didn't tell you HOW to upload in High Quality:

If any are wondering how to upload high quality videos, I used Windows Media Encoder (free d/n), converted the video to 640x480, and uploaded it.

At first just the old fuzzy version will appear. Give it time, and it should eventually show the "click here for higher quality" link.

You may thank me by visiting my channel (over 100 quality videos).

Or forget I ever helped you, you selfish bastard (<-- sarcasm).

The higher quality encoding is a welcome improvement! But although the audio is better in general, there is a problem. It sounds like audio volume levelling or a compressor is being used and it is raising the level of quiet parts of the sound track far too much and it is very noticeable on some videos. The standard resolution encoding, although low-fi, does not have that effect. I don't think a compressor should be used at all as it alters the sound - the encoder should just try to reproduce what was on the original video as accurately as possible, it should not alter the original relative sound levels through the video.

Once again, extremist, Islamists win another battle against the ever more weak spined and compliant west. And this win is ominous for the Internet because now the Islamofascists don't even have to take control of a government or a population to impose their oppression on the people of the world. They can do it all across the world at once with cyberterror.

    640x480 - h.264 - 15 fps

Does anyone know how to be listed in the subcategory pages in music category?

I suspected that if I add the subcategory title like "rock" as the video description tag, the video would be labeled as "rock".

However my video wasn't listed in "Most recent" or "Most viewed today" page of my target subcategory.

I appreciate if you help me solve this youtube riddle.

You guys suck for taking away the most viewed search tool! Even when we work around it changes the balance of power and kills what made YouTube cool. This is the beginning of the end for YouTube. It is only a matter of time before we all migrate. Bye bye. Have fun with your new really really expensive and outdated app.

Close but not quite there yet!

This is what I put in another post somewhere else. Now see suggestion at the end.

I bet it still won't be the same as Stage6. VEOH is no where near as good and as for Vuze. Well, let us not go there in this forum!

I don't know where all these people get the idea we need more software from their company on our systems to handle all the different formats. Microsoft has already decided that for us.

Divx was by far the best, I know of, for size/ quality ratios. Mp4 HD is excellent but too big for most. MKV just a container for other formats; nothing more (thanks for not much Vuze/Azureus).

    Suggestion:

Accept Divx or MP4 (etc) formats and give the user the chance to view or download in Low/Med or original resolution. If you show the resolution, then we will know the quality.

The extra download revenue from the ISPs would be enough to fund it.

Or, stick a commerical at the end of it if you like (not at the beginning, that just puts people off before they begin)

Okay, I just watched Malasonja1's goodbye video, and apparently her videos were removed, leading to the suspension of her account, when they weren't even violating the terms of use? That's total BS. If you're going to outlaw a certain type of video, you need to state that clearly in the terms of use. People put a lot of time and effort into their accounts, and to just ban them when they haven't broken any rules is not only unfair, it's also asinine and shameful. This is not even the first time I've heard of this happening; it seems to be a common theme here on YouTube. Furthermore, if you're going to outlaw criticisms of one group of people, you need to be unbiased and outlaw criticisms of every group of people. If you outlaw criticisms of Muslims, you need to also outlaw criticisms of Christians, Buddhists, agnostics, atheists, Democrats, Republicans, independents, blacks, whites, Asians, Hispanics, dentists, cheerleaders, prostitutes, pedophiles, rapists, and all other groups I didn't bother to mention. Thank you.

My high quality video uploads are still turning out low quality on youtube. I tried the &fmt=18 and &fmt=16 hack and although it did work and the video appeared in high quality, it only played for a few seconds and then stopped. And these are videos uploaded after this announcement was made. Why is this high quality thing only working for certain videos and not others? My source files are high quality but they turn out low quality on youtube. There must be something more users need to do besides "upload the highest quality video available" because apparently that's not all it takes. Like others have suggested please just give us the right settings we need to encode our videos at in order for it to be high quality on youtube. That would make things so much easier.

Independant if the videos are HQ or not: I hate videos ( the music-clips ) that aren't videos ! Lot of people upload cover-views of a vinyl-bag of the record or some photo-pics or let an old vinyl spin on their pickup. That is so boring and only charges the server with trash. To listen such music we can do it another way and need no screen.

Hope that more fans have the same opinion.

Its a great idea, Utube, to allow for bigger file sizes and better quality playback for those with fast connections. I too would like to see longer play times too--especially in the News and Politics section. I listened to the whole of Obama's speech on racism which lasted for far more than 10 mins. Why can't others do this? 10 min is too restrictive. And it is time consuming to split up speeches into multiple clips. 20 min for News and Politics would be a big help.

Ok. Enoughs about hi-quality. How about telling users the requirement. I am just speculating, 640x360 for 16:9 and 640x480 for 4:3, is that now the standard. Wouldn't it be awesome if you guys could just play our video without encoding it to flash and crap. I think youtube is fast, that's good, but videos that are HD provider much better viewing experience. Can you now update your page about the requirement of video size??? 320x240, that old fashioned size!!
It's about time to tell the users what they need to do to get hi-def and make it available for all videos; why do you have to discriminate people, can a site be held responsible by law if it acts differently for some people and differently for others. Just a question. Hi Def ? What a joke, go for Hi Def because a lot of your users are going else where. Does that make any sense of keeping users here on youtube ?

sorry for typo, all I am saying is this:

When you login to gmail it says, so and so GB storage is available and that number keeps going up. What about for youtube ? Why can't you just play the videos we have submitted as they are sent to you ? Can anyone tell me here what's the maximum bitrate I can now use , I am guess that might be the trick to get hi-quality even if they don't change the requirement of video size. Is that how you do it ?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have uploaded videos in another account and my experience in getting HQ (High Quality) from your video is this: convert your video to full-screen size (640x480 or higher) AND a 850-900 kbps bitrate. My 10 min video was about 70 MB in size. When I did these TWO things, my video had that TV icon under the Player and I could view it in HQ.

Now, the video I uploaded was 70MB at 720x480 pix and 900 kbps video and stereo audio. When I examined the corresponding HQ video from youtube , it became: 50 MB file at 480x320 pix and 500 kbps and stero audio. The SQ (standard quality) low resolution youtube file was: 25MB at 320x240 pix and around 300kbps.

If youtube has designated your videos HQ (the little TV icon appears under the player), then go to your account and click on the Playback Video Quality link, and select the "Always play back higher quality videos when available".

Oh, I made a mistake in one of my previous comments. When I examined the youtube HQ (high quality) video, the format was 480x360 pixels .... not the 480x320 pix I stated below.

As kidneybean666 pointed out, if I upload fullscreen clip (4:3 aspect ratio), I get the option to choose HQ or standard Q. But if I upload a widescreen clip (16:9), I don't get that option, and must manually add &fmt=18 to the URL to see HQ. When will this work with widescreen clips?

    Answer for dwtsfan2007:
I think if you post either a fullscreen or widescreen clip... always convert to 640x480 (or higher) and I think you will be able to view your widescreen in HQ.

kidneybean666, when you say convert widescreen to 640x480, do you mean adding black bars to the top & bottom of widescreen to make it full screen (4:3 AR)? Yes, I know that works; I tried it. Without adding black bars, can it be done?

dwtsfan2007, I am converting all my vids to 640x480 now. In my other account, I converted the widescreen Bell Book and Candle to 640x480, and the black bars appeared automatically.
I do not even know how to add the black bars in.

I would give it a try ... maybe just convert at 640x480 and upload a small 2 min video to test it out. Convert at a high enough video bit rate too... I use 900kbps but it could be lower if you experiment on the bit rate settings.

slackinbr made some VERY GOOD points I share above. I applaud YouTube for moving towards higher quality, especially as sites like Flickr have such crisp video — but the audio is buggy and badly distorted.

So, with the video looking better but the audio clearly being worse, this should be remedied. I've sent numerous support emails and provided clear repros but haven't heard anything back. :(

We demand ExtantDodo's account be restored. This is not the first time creationists have used bogus copyright claims to silence their critics on youtube. You should be aware of this tactic by now, and the fact you have yet to reverse this absurd decision shows something is rotten on fair youtube.

Make the flaggers write the reasons to remove a video or suspend an account, instead of making hard to suspended the real transgressors.

My older videos are high quality, and around 20-40mb in size.

My newer ones are around 75mb in size, yet the quality isn't just bad, it's terrible. What's more is that the high quality option isn't available any more!

Why is this happening? They are all produced in exactly the same way using the same settings, so why are some high quality and others not? they're just not watchable in their current state.

I can't get the HQ options to work either. Same problems as most people have listed below. There's a site better than youtube that instantly works with hq videos. I can't get mine to work, though I follow all the steps and tutorials people post. That site is vimeo.

To get the HQ option, encode video in Xvid/Divx 480x360 or 640x480 (as recommended by youtube), and 4:3 aspect ratio. If your clip is widescreen, you must add black bars to the top and bottom of the video screen to make it 4:3. After upload, it could take up to 1-2 hours (depending on video length) for the HQ option to actually appear under the video window. I've been doing this for the last 6 months with no problem.
