Another potentially helpful feature, only limited to a small group...

At least the ads on them don't appear to be too distracting, if at all.

I agree, let others have a go. This way, other people discover the partnership is not all it's cracked up to be and you guys can stop beating around the bush and just make the money/exposure you need to. you own adsense. People will stay on the site if it's good, full stop. If you can't make the partnership happen for everybody quickly, then just stop it all together otherwise the wrong ideas start to pop up and fair enough, you're give such little info about it people think we're rolling in it.

@ omfgjohnstube... i can see your point here, but look at it from their perspective. if they gave it to everybody (the bits of advertising revenues) the pool of money gets significantly smaller. can they honestly give everybody a little bit of money, or should they support those that can guarantee a fairly loyal fan base (with a significant number of views). advertisers don't want to pay money to post an ad no one sees.

look at it this way. the onus is on you to produce better content. sure there's a lot of crap that's solely for shock or controversy... but i believe that if you post quality content you'll get recognized sooner or later. do this first because you love it, worry about the money later.

i've had a subscription here for a while and would like to post some stuff, but i just haven't invested the time. it feels as though there are too many established personalities, as if my voice wouldn't be heard. having said that, look at *shudder* Chris Crocker. is he talented, does he have anything of real intelligence in his posts, is there one iota of "quality" in his videos? i'm not an expert on his videos(as i've seen three), but i'd be inclined to say no. definitively. but the sad fact is that it's morbidly entertaining. if your page (or video) is entertaining on a physical/comedic level, mental/spiritual level, or if it's just a clever bit of work. it'll be noticed. it'll resonate with people and bounce around the net. sure some people get attention for steaming piles of excrement, but you can't let those bunch of hacks keep ya down can you?

in conclusion though, i actually agree with you guys to a point. metacafe apparently pays by the views the video gets... perhaps youtube can adopt a similar program in case a small nobody comes out of nowhere and posts a massively viewed video. this way they are rewarded for their individual efforts, rather than how big their subscriber base is. i don't know. just a thought.

But contemporarybeatnik, because they are only offering a portion of what the ads make on that person's video, they can't lose, their money pools don't become smaller, they only grow because they can now collect on more videos. FAPPY 2007!

Once again, YouTube is playing clear favorites to who and who can't participate in their programs like this, including their partner programs.

Our channel has well over 1.3 million views, professionally produced, but YouTube (editor team?) seems to clearly pick their favorites without any reason or thought to why those are selected over others. Many selected in their partner programs have questionable videos, or haven't even posted new content in ages -- I wish someone from YouTube would be above board and explain why they play favorites.

Why should only select people make the grade here without any guidelines to what is selected or not? Many small publishers have collectively made YouTube as popular as it is today, yet YouTube is now turning their backs on the 99% of the content owners here.

I applied for the partner program twice, no response -- Not even professional enough for a canned response from them.... Just doesn't seem fair that they continue to make money from people's content and yet clearly play favorites with users.

Hopefully the 99% of YouTube users at large can help the team at Google realize that playing favorites with their pre-selected group of publishers is not fair, especially when it's us that's provider YouTube new content every day.

There are lots of other options out there other than YouTube (more coming in the next couple of years) -- This will not be lost on people, when you clearly turned your back on the majority of your users.

This is Tim from Next New Networks, and unfortunately this blog post is linking to an account we really don't use to provide content on YouTube. To get a better sense of our content on YouTube, check out our many YouTube channels like fastlanedaily, threadbanger, jetsetshow, channelfrederator, viropop, and indymogul, all of which are accessible by visiting youtube.com plus the name of the channel after the forward slash. Or you can visit us at nextnewnetworks.com.

Off subject here, but I don't know where to offer up some good ideas for the future of Youtube. How about a link to a Youtube TV channel next to the Featured Column that plays editor and community favorites on a continuous loop for people who don't know where to start or just want someone else to select the vids for them. Perhaps give a link to the Youtuber's channel after each video before moving on to the next. As long as there were no commercials, I'd like to see something like that.

@ fallofautumndistro(mainly) and ROCKME2THETOP... ok, ok, clearly i haven't been here long enough to know the skinny on what's going down, and you have a point if what you're saying is correct. perchance they did go with your scheme and paid people according to the ads on their page... makes enough sense. now, lets say say advertising agency "X" gives youtube $500,000 to advertise a project (album/movie/product)... typically i would assume that each company has a set amount they're willing to pay to get key product placement rahter than a "we'll pay you blank for every click we recieve, or blank for every transaction made after the link click", but let's suppose their budget is big enough and they work with that scheme (what about movie trailers though... you don't really sell anything tangible there, they simply pay for exposure. how fast would that money get eaten up by ALL the content publishers?) i would imagine if they're smart they would try to associate certain ads with certain channels (gotta "channel" in the market for a particular product). i doubt blunty or boh3m3 are going to attract a lot of mascara ads (though i'm sure they have plenty of female viewers) as their primary demographic is probably 20-something males... this is the key market here (not necessarily youtube, and not because they spend more than women... as i'm sure anyone with a girlfriend knows. i kid, i kid). tv execs are losing these guys by the truckloads to halo and other great games and electronic entertainment. now they wanna reach out and reconnect with that market... anyway, let me reiterate that i'm no marketing expert (psych degree here... for all the good its done. lol.), but can you imagine the logistical nightmare of having to share EVERY click/sale generated by EVERY youtube poster?! insanity... how many checks would they have to send out on a monthly basis. envelopes and stamps aren't free (there's always paypal i suppose). i will end with this though. i can see your frustration and understand the feeling that it's not fair. it isn't in a sense. but advertising folks aren't worried about fair, they're worried about the bottom line. but feel consolation in the fact youtube won't be able to survive in the state that it's in now if they continue to overlook the "99%" of those consistent original content providers. other video hosting companies are players in this game and folks from here have already been wooed by other competitors of youtube. friendster came out first, then look at the beast myspace became. youtube's on top now, and i imagine google will do their best to keep this investment profitable (despite potentially billion dollar lawsuits... ouch. good luck google/youtube!) if you're really pissed send some kind of a message. disgruntled channels unite! you have nothing to lose but your ad revenue (which you don't have now anyway), contact one another and stage a mass exodus. surely your combined viewing power is impressive enough to warrant notice. if you all delete your content or accounts in droves (preferably a single and unmissable moment) i'm sure someone's going to take notice. solidarity people... solidarity.

i want to make sure that i'm not leaving the impression that abandoning youtube in droves is the only option (see post below). it's the most EXTREME option, and it just may backfire. what i'm saying is that it's obvious this site has a great community going here, i'm challenging you to utilize it. organize. don't burn bridges if you don't have too. things have a way of working themselves out, but by all means feel free to try to steer it a bit. the squeaky wheel gets the grease... and all that other hokey stuff. good luck kids, and Godspeed!

as a partner myself, can i just say, especially judging from the comments underneath, that i think everybody has a very different image of what the partnership is like. Like i mentioned earlier, youtube have been far too vague about it and if anything, the partnership program has only caused unecessary divide amongst the community. This whole thing was presented as a 'trial' during which only a small percentage of people would be allowed to participate in revenue sharing. This suggests that in the future, everybody will be able to access this. For anyone who thinks that the revenue sharing results in earning a lot of cash, i'm sure once you enter it, you'll realise it's hardly the case. Sit tight, i'm sure they will expand it because people need to realise this is just their way of keeping people on their website. They don't care. They don't give a shit about anybody.

So, either give it to everybody or just ditch it. Your company treat the people who provide content to this website like idiots.

Update: Video units will be live in AdSense accounts later today (10/9). Currently this feature is open only to publishers located in the United States with English-language websites.

So, I guess everyone outside of the US misses out?

i read most but not all of the comments below...enjoy reading all...i think it's great, i mean is a win-win-win situation, coz the partners can get more exposures outside of yt, advertisers get their messages out (thru third party websites) and at the same time, publishers can earn money from that, i think yt is not trying to force us to see ads on the videos, if not, they can just put all kinds of ads and pop ups on our videos and on our channels without giving us a penny because yt is a free service, ads support free service, just like some of the free email and other web hosting services.... one more thing, it is better than in-stream ads, which the first ten seconds or so is the ad and you have to wait until it passes to watch the real contents...
for the partnership program, i have no comment man...

YouTube staff, You need an effective way to allow a user to contest the removal of his/her video and an equally effective review process. Your generic responses to questions is not sufficient. Just like a parking ticket. Your policy of assuming guilt is resulting in the removal of some of the most popular and completely appropriate videos that are greatly responsible for attracting users to your site. It may sound silly, but the "Flying Spaghetti Monster Preacher" video was one of the most compelling videos by one of the most popular users on YouTube. Please let us know why it was removed.

Please reinstate CapOAwesome's "Flying Spaghetti Monster Preacher" vid. I've viewed it, and there's nothing offensive in it - no bad language, no violence, no sexual content. It fits within YouTubes TOS guidelines, so I don't understand why it has been removed!

    To whom it may concern,
I was recently forced against my will to view a certain video by a man by the name of Cap0Awesome. He claims that his video pertaining to the great and splendiferous spaghetti monster was removed because of inappropriate content. If the reason is of a "bad-words" nature, then this is a huge error on your terms. Now you must remove all the millions of videos with "bad-word" content all over youtube. I would kindly ask you to place some sort of evidence to enforce your arguments.
    Cheers, the Youtube video watcher.

I was looking at my favorites the other day and I noticed one of them was deleted. What really bothered me was that it was against his will and unfairly done so with out any kind of explanation. I think maybe that just because atheists aren't the loudest bunch with a bunch of freedom of religion issues that you think it's ok to ignore us. I would like to correct that mistake today.

calm down, his video is back. can we focus on the issue at hand here? there are more important things on youtube other than His Noodlyness. someone probably kept flagging the video and it was auto-deleted... does anyone know if that's how it works? is there a person or persons who reviews videos flagged, or are they automatically removed. i'd appreciate clarity on this issue as well.

I just started poking around this site about 3 months ago and found interesting options from various individuals, and recently, as of 3 months ago, started to upload videos.
The dedication I found in these people with their opinions, beliefs and convictions are a tremendous attribute to not only them as individuals but to YouTube as a website, business and a (dare I say) family. They work very hard in thieir crafts, plot out scripted works, buy costumes or whatever they have to do just to invoke some type of thinking process, entertain thier personal subscribers or....just to make someone smile.
Others even encouraged me to come from behind my account and to speak to the world, which I did, earlier tonight, before I discovered these "happenings", now I fear a random shutdown of my account without any "fair warning" or "official notice". Would that be a business savvy action to take upon a new potential customer?

If business model rule #1 is:
    The customer is always right.

    Then isn't business rule #2:
Customer relationship management should be employed and examined for satisfaction of said client.

i.e. - I wouldn't walk you around my store, push you to purchase items, then trip you on your way out.

...and if that doesn't work, 2 words for ya:

    Come aahhhnn

    Thanks for your time.

I believe that YOutube must censor if this corporation is to stay up and running. I understand the legalities and laws that corporations face when people sue due to emotional distress, slander, defamation of character, something there young teenager saw, etc., so, I do understand why you must censor; let alone that you have chosen to market to an audience of 13 and up so its your job to make sure content is appropriate. I have a long list of ideas though that I plan on sending to the editor but real quick I wanted to address something that is of my concern. I hope Youtube will adapt in the future a 3 strikes your out game plan. With this option if Youtube has removed 3 videos and presented the TOS violation to the youtuber and the youtube still continues to violate TOS THEN ban them from Youtube. I do feel that a year is a good disciplinary action because banning permanently, is emotionally disruptive to the feeling of "belonging" which is real and alive on Youtube. I do feel a person should have the option to use that channel again so its basically on hold during this year. I do feel some behavior warrants a forever banning but in my opinion, that would entail a Youtuber threatening to physically kill another. I realize this is a corporation and my opinion is just one but I do have a strong understanding of the nature of business and people. When a persons channel is pulled without warning, this creates havoc and that is not what Youtube wants. We are adults but learning is always a continual lesson for us all and warnings through the removal of videos is effective and beneficial teaching. Best Regards, Raven
